Things To Do In Richmond!

Good food, good theater, good music, good dance, good art. Those are the ingredients of a night on the town in Richmond. This arts city on the James has plenty of them all.

Richmond theater, which has been around for the better of 200 years, probably offers more homegrown action than in any city of its size in the country; last season, for example, 33 plays and 17 musicals were produced here. The Shanghai Quartet, which shares a dual residency here at the University of Richmond and with Montclair State University in New Jersey, is one of the finest chamber music ensembles in the world. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is one of the best regional museums in the country. The Richmond Ballet will offer four exciting, innovative attractions in its studio theater along with two more traditional works at the Landmark Theater in 2002-03.

And bite-for-bite, few cities anywhere in the U.S. can provide more and better restaurants with more varied cuisine.

Food Readily Available

Wherever you go for the arts, you will find a top-notch food establishment right around the corner. At the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts or the Swift Creek Mill Playhouse, you'll find good food on the premises.

The Virginia Museum is also home to TheatreVirginia, Richmond's leading equity playhouse (although it is contemplating a move downtown to a performing arts complex), and such musical attractions as Interludes, a summer chamber series, and Fast Forward, featuring avant-garde attractions. Your dining options include the museum's cafeteria, or if you are a museum member ($40 for individuals or $60 for families) you may taste elegant regional dishes in the members' dining suite.

Virginia cuisine is the main bill-of-fare at Swift Creek Mill Playhouse. Even if you don't choose to attend a play there, the restaurant will serve you.

The Carpenter Center's main tenants are the Richmond Symphony, an all-professional regional orchestra, and the Virginia Opera, based in Norfolk.

Some of the great restaurants are located nearby The Carpenter Center in Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom, a very short drive away. Art lovers can browse in galleries as well as eat in these two lively neighborhoods.

The Landmark Theater will be host to most of the visiting Broadway Under the Stars productions during the most seasons.

University Arts

A few blocks away is Virginia Commonwealth University's performing arts center, which on Oct. 28 will be renamed W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts in honor of the major donor of a $2 million endowment for VCU's jazz program. In the center are the 502-seat Vlahcevic Concert Hall and the university's theater.

A short block away is VCU's Anderson Gallery. An art opening there is always an event, when artists from the university's nationally recognized art program show their works.

Restaurants abound in the area surrounding VCU, known as the Fan District. And, along West Main Street, which has had a renaissance in recent years, one may eat at top-flight restaurants and enjoy art in several private galleries.

For those choosing not to eat at the Virginia Museum restaurants, the nearby Carytown overflows with a variety of restaurants. Art galleries dot the area as well.

The University of Richmond, a splendid tree-lined campus of neo-gothic buildings, is rapidly becoming one of the region's leaders in the fine arts. The university boasts the classy Modlin Center for the Arts with its Marsh Art Gallery, Camp Concert Hall and Alice Jepson Theatre, home for the University Players.

Auto racing you say? No problem. The Richmond International Raceway is home to the Bush Series and Winston Cup Grand National Racing. Usually two times a year major events are held as part of the racing tour. Over 100,000 fans make their way to one of the most exciting events each year.

Ice hockey? You can get your fix at The Freezer. The Richmond Renegades, our hometown ice hockey heroes play rough and tumble ice hockey at its best.

Can't get rid of that World Cup fever? The Richmond Kickers have what you are looking for. Soccer is a major sport among young and old. We have one of the best international league soccer teams.

No matter which sport interests you, chances are Richmond has it to offer:

Real Estate Tips
Animal House >Termites

Most home purchase agreements have clauses that deal with termites. After the agreement is ratified, a termite inspection is arranged. Before the closing can occur, the sellers must be able to produce papers signed by a licensed exterminator stating that the house is free of infestation and that any termite damage has been repaired.

Before you sign an agreement to buy or sell a home, you should read the termite clause and be sure that you understand it. Who selects the exterminator and pays for the inspection? If bugs are found, who pays for the treatment? Are the sellers obligated to repair any damage and have they placed a limit of the dollar amount they will spend on those repairs? If treatment is required, the buyers may want a chance to discuss the options with the pest control company, especially if someone in the family is sensitive to the chemicals used to control the termites. Ask about the exterminator's guarantees or service contract options.
