Chesterfield, VA - Homes for Sale and Community Information
Chesterfield is a small, friendly community of Chesterfield County, and considered part of the Richmond metropolitan area. Chesterfield and the county itself are virtually synonymous terms -- the county is the fourth largest municipality in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with a population of about 323,000.
Chesterfield has been recognized as the "17th Best Place to Live in America" by
Money
Magazine. It also was included in the list of the "100 Best Communities in America for Young People."
As one can see, a home in Chesterfield will bring the family endless community activities and recreational experiences, and the real estate options are just as varied. There are new homes available that offer energy-efficient systems and designs. There's also older homes of a more historic vintage that have the character and personality of Old Virginia.
History
Chesterfield County is one of the oldest European settlements in the New World. In 1611, "the Citie of Henricus" was established here, eighty miles up the James River from Jamestown. This was just four years after the founding of Jamestown. Therefore, there are Chesterfield properties that stand on ground walked upon by settlers over four centuries ago. Henricus was responsible for the very first hospital in the New World. It was also the site of the first chartered college and the first iron furnace as well. Also, the commercial production of tobacco first began here.
Parks and Recreation
The Chesterfield County
Parks and Recreation
Department offers many activities, social events and sports leagues. Pocahontas State Park,
encompassing over 7,000 acres, is the largest in the entire Commonwealth. For a picnic, simple
jog or pickup game, there are smaller community parks like Harry G. Daniel Park and Bird Park. Birkdale Golf Club is one of the more popular Richmond area courses with golf aficionados.
Attractions and Events
Chesterfield is a tight-knit community, and there is plenty happening year round. Henricus Historical Park re-creates the lives of the early settlers through re-enactments and historical interpretation. In September, during Publick Days, English Colonists and Virginia Indians re-enact the agricultural, military, and domestic abilities from the 17th Century.
Pocahontas State Park ampitheater hosts Pocahontas Premieres! every summer. Performances feature both new and established Virginia performers, and sometimes the Richmond Symphony often performs at the large amphitheater. Every January, The Virginia Dance Festival offers Richmond-area dance groups an opportunity to demonstrate their talents.
The Banff Mountain Film Festival in March offers films about exotics locales and interesting outdoor experiences. In April, enjoy the tastings offered by 18 Virginia wineries at the "Celebration of the Vine." In May, there's a Mother's Day Tea at Magnolia Grange. Bon Air Victorian Day also helped to celebrate Mother's Day. A parade of bands and antique cars is followed by a genuine celebration of Americana.
The fourth of July celebration is held at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds. Those that own Chesterfield real estate and many others bring blankets and lawn chairs for the fireworks extravaganza. August brings a unique 1622 Survival Camp, where children take part in activities like musketeer drills, blacksmithing, gardening, and sewing. In October, the Midlothian Village Day Festival and Craft Fair includes tours of the Midlothian Mines. December brings the James River Parade of Lights. This is a lighted boat parade that can be enjoyed from a variety of special viewing sites along the banks of the James River. The Chester Kiwanis Christmas Parade hails the arrival of the holiday season as well.
