History
Goochland history spans four centuries, and can be traced back to 1749 when the Virginia colonial government decided to divide its eight shires into counties. One of these counties became what is now known as Goochland when the Virginia colonial government decided to name one of the counties after Sir William Gooch.
The county quickly became famous for its tobacco plantations that featured beautiful and historical Virginia Tidewater architecture designs. Many of these homes were used as headquarters for British troops during the American Revolution.
Goochland remained a farming community until the late 1950s when the Federal Reserve's Richmond branch opened an axillary office near what is now Goochland's West Lake Business Park. This office provide the basis for a thriving financial service industry that is now one of Goochland's largest economic sectors.
