History

The history of Midlothian began over three centuries ago as a coal mining village coal established by the French Huguenots. High quality coal from Midlothian mines heated the White House for President Thomas Jefferson. In 1804, a toll road was constructed to connect Midlothian to communities to the east. In 1807, this road was surfaced with gravel. Today, the Manchester Turnpike follows the route of this historic road that was first built over two centuries ago.

 Parks and Recreation

Pocahontas State Park is located in the middle of a thick forest. At 7950 acres in size, it is the largest state park in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Both Beaver Lake and Swift Creek Lake give visitors a chance to enjoy fishing as well as wildlife viewing. Around Beaver Lake there is a five-mile bicycle trail and also a trail that is universally accessible.  There are also about 10 miles of Bridle trails in this expansive park. There are single track mountain bike trails that range from "easy" to "expert" in difficulty.

Midlothian Mines State Park is a great place to take the kids. There's an area near one of the old mines where they can hunt for precious stones like amazonite and garnets. There are wonderful scenic trails and a fishing lake. Locals develop a real appreciation for the history and importance of the coal mining industry in Virginia. Many homes for sale in Midlothian are situated amidst historic sites that are many centuries old.

Swift Creek Reservoir was created in 1965 to provide drinking water to the Richmond metropolitan area. Its 1700 acres today offer great fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and swimming possibilities. Waterfront communities on the Reservoir include golf courses, tennis courts, and swimming pools, and a few have clubhouses and sailing clubs.

Attractions and Events

The diverse action of Richmond is nearby, but Midlothian has its own singular charm and personality. One of the highlights for locals is the annual Village Day Festival and

Craft Fair, held in the Fall. Food vendors, crafts exhibitions and entertainment bring out the whole community for Village Day. The 4,000-capacity Heritage Amphitheater at Pocahontas State Park hosts concerts and stage performances, often with the Richmond Symphony.
